In January 2020 the FDA provided guidance to ensure the availability of PPE during the pandemic.  In September 2021 the FDA issued revised guidance. This version provides further updates related to barrier face coverings not intended to provide liquid barrier protection, filtration efficiency, labeling recommendations, and use of inventories of non-NIOSH approved filtering facepiece respirators (FFR).
